Check out nPHP Jagels, it's what I run and it's really wicked with the exception of a number of features.  Another thing I don't like about it, you can't modify user accounts.  You can only delete them and add new ones.  LAME!

Here is what I have planned.

News posting

  • Auto archiving

  • Category based

  • ?Sticky? news items for the day (ie: important updates)

  • Posting code such as
, , etc. ?As well as HTML. ?This is also for comment posters (but without the HTML)

    Comments

    • Comments may only be posted on the currently displayed news items (not on archived items)

    • Moderators may ban users, delete comments, delete all comments by a certain user, or mass prune all comments posted since a certain day.

    User Preferences

    • Users may select which news categories they wish to see (however admin can set certain categories to ALWAYS be displayed)

    • Users status can update to ?veteran? either by post count, or an admin setting it for them, and they can change their custom title and or avatar (this can always be turned off by admin)

    Admin Options

    • Administrators can edit all user accounts

    • Change all script configuration settings

I?m not sure if I?m going to implement the XML news feed though, there really doesn?t seem to be a need for it.
