Colorado Springs - Two Colorado Springs police officers were shot and a man was fatally wounded in a gunfight and car chase late Saturday.
The officers, who were not identified, did not appear to have life-threatening injuries, a Colorado Springs police sergeant said.
The officers and the wounded man, who later died, were taken to Memorial Hospital.
"We think they're doing fine," the sergeant said of the officers.
A third officer was injured when he was struck by a van driven by a fleeing suspect, and he also was not considered seriously injured.
Witnesses reported seeing two gunmen, and police said there could be two other suspects besides the dead man.
The incident began about 9 p.m. at a Best Buy electronics store near Powers Boulevard and South Carefree Circle on the northeast side of town.
Police said they were called when one man allegedly tried purchasing computer equipment with bad checks.
When the officers arrived, the person opened fire and hit two of them, police said.
Witness Billy Gibson, 16, said he and his friend were pulling up to the parking lot of the shopping development where the Best Buy is located when one of the gunmen tried waving down his car.
"We saw the man run down a hill and jump in front of the van in front of us, and he was just standing in the road trying to get us to stop," Gibson said.
"We saw he had a gun in his hand, so we freaked out and went around him.
"Then I saw a cop on the hill where the guy just ran from, and after we passed ... we heard shots fired."
One man fled the area in a van owned by a private security company that patrols the shopping area but crashed at a police roadblock on North Academy Boulevard at East Platte Avenue.
Gunfire ensued, but it was not known how the dead suspect sustained his gunshot wound.
The guy was trying to buy a laptop and an Xbox with a check, and we needed to confirm his I.D.
The I.D. he gave us was fake as shit, and the hologram was black & white and clearly photocopied. My manager called the cops, and stalled the guy while the cops came.
When a cop rounded our department, the fucker ran off to the back of the store and two cops hit him with a tazar. The guy fell to the ground, pulled out a pistol and hit one cop in the leg and another in the chest. More cops surrounded him and shot his dumbass and apparently died in the hospital.
Both cops are okay and the one that got shot in the chest was wearing a bullet proof vest.
Seems like he had some guys helping him out, and one of them hit a third cop with a van in the back of the store. I had to stay till 2:30 am and work at 9:00, what an asshole :o
