I ordered the Hellsing boxset this week, hopefully I'll get it on Monday.
Kindred: where did you get it and how much did it cost?
I ordered it in Hong Kong for 30 bucks :D
"... even close to Noir's level storywise are Trigun ..."
Trigun is far from the best example you could have used to support your anti paper thin argument.
"... stategies used in the battles ..."
I think it's beyond the scope of the series to come up with some explicitly original forms of warfare. The same with Griffith's philosophic monologues, they aren't meant to redefine classical thinking or tactics on par with <insert famous military figure here> they're just to develop him as a sage and as a potent general on the battlefield.
"... The Hawks used mainly light swords ..."
So what?
"a clich? incompetent, cowardly and enormously annoying enemy leader"
I agree on this
"Blue Whale Ultra-Heavy Armored Reckless Knights of Destruction Vice-Squad-Leader Samson"
That's one of the quirks of Japanese, literal translations usually sounds ridiculous.
"The philosophical aspects in Evangelion are a nice addition"
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah
You were right about hellsing though, it's grossly overhyped and has vitually no rewatchable value which kind of defeats the purpose of owning a series on DVD.
Kami I got mine about the same. My brother in law and I have th hook up down at the Harbor center so we get good deals on a lot of stuff.
As for all those that apparently dont like Hellsing, I guess I cam understand where you are coming from. I should have realized that there are people who actually watch anime/manga for the plots and stories as well. I enjoy a good plot as well, but for me it doesnt have to be anything rock solid. Mainly, I suppose, because to me it is just a cartoon. I can understand your want for thicker story/plot line, it really frustrates me when people hype up a movie and then I go and see it and the whole time(if I even finish watching it) I am thinking to myself wow these characters are so fake what is the director trying to do ressurect B movies?
Trigun is far from the best example you could have used to support your anti paper thin argument.
Trigun does have horrible enemies that feel like they were taken from children's cartoons and a lot of wacko humour. This doesn't mean that it's main plot isn't meaningful if you look deeper than just the surface.

Yes, but I'd have like them to come up with something a bit more complicated than something like: "First platoon leads, the second follows and third comes last! Charge!" or something like that (I don't have my Berserk CDs available ATM so I can't get the accurate quote). This doesn't mean that there werent's also some well done fights.
Also, in the second episode, people admiring Gatts's technique when he is animated clumsily making a simple up->down chop time after time was just ridiculous. I don't want these things made perfectly, I just want them done well enough to not to break the style.
"... The Hawks used mainly light swords ..."So what?
Light sword @ plate mail -> maybe a slight scratch on the armor. May sound nitpicky but it looks ridiculous to me when someone penetrates a thick breast plate with a light weapon such as a saber. True, they sometimes aimed at the weak spots in the armor but this is a way too unreliable solution specially when you are wearing a heavy armor yourself which hampers your movement.
"Blue Whale Ultra-Heavy Armored Reckless Knights of Destruction Vice-Squad-Leader Samson"That's one of the quirks of Japanese, literal translations usually sounds ridiculous.
True, it's not fair to judge the series by a mistake made by the subbers by translating it literally - my bad. The character himself broke the style badly, though. The previous episode had just given a lot more insight into the main characters and when he appeared it was a way too big an anticlimax.
By the way, I actually like Berserk as a whole.
"The philosophical aspects in Evangelion are a nice addition"hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah
Actually, this is the only reason why I might even bother to watch the whole series some day. Like I have said in this thread, I generally dislike mechas.
Haven't gotten my Hellsing boxset in yet :(
