Essay #2: Profile
Chat: A Lifestyle
You?ve just entered the chat room for some of the most computer experienced people on the planet called ?Semicolon-Zero?, with people who have all but given up real life to assure their social status in a group of no more than 25 regulars. ?People who brag about how long they?ve been awake, how fast their computer is, or how much pirated software they have. ?What kind of things would you expect them to talk about, perhaps some top-secret government information? Maybe some info on a new underground computer chip?
?dubey: pauly shore is teh kewlest guy ever invented ollol?
Maybe not what most would expect. ?Semicolon-Zero is not just a basic ?chat room? for people to chat about latest school gossip (in fact, very few members even live in the same country), but much, much more. ?Semicolon-Zero was first started as a small chat room on a public chat server in May, 2000, by a man who goes under the handle ?mr_lee?. ?Gradually, people would hear of Semi0 (as many have come to call it) by word of online mouth, and a few would become regulars. ?As it became more and more popular, it was moved to a private secure network to cut down on new members. ?That?s when the lifestyle of online chat evolved.
All types of social classes have their own lingo and slang that are commonly used, and Semi0 is no different. ?For example: the term newbie was changed to newb, then noob, and now is commonly used as n00b. ?The term ?LOL? which means ?laughing out loud? is no longer used as such, instead the person who is laughing will randomly punch the L and O key in proportion to how hard they?re laughing. ?Another technique used out of habit for most is the random misspelling or random letter insertion on certain words. ?So when someone asks question, rarely will you see ?What??, but more often you will see ?wut?, ?wat?, or ?wjat?. ?Still though, most of the language is understandable to a Semi0 n00b, and the lingo is a relatively small part of the lifestyle.
Since the beginning of Semicolon-Zero, different pieces of freeware software have been created, including MikeJ?s ?ViewBot?, which overloads a web server with information and slows it down to a halt. ?Not only is software made, but also Semi0 gaming clans for games such as ?Counter-Strike?, and ?Command and Conquer: Renegade? are organized and run through the chat. ?A clan is even in the works for a game that hasn?t been released yet. ?Some members are even widely known webmasters, and create professional type webpages. ?Other regulars have made bumper stickers, mugs, mouse pads, and t-shirts showing everyone that they are a Semicolon-Zero member, to show their real life friends.
The stereotype for a smart computer user no longer really remains valid in the 21st century, and especially not in the case of Semicolon-Zero. ?The average age of a Semi0 user is 20, and not one race or nationality makes the most noticeable appearance. ?People from all different parts of the planet chat: Sweden, Australia, Canada, The United States, and even Ireland are homes to members. Gender plays little role, at least 5 or 6 of the regulars are females from age 14 to age 22. ?Many also have quite active social lives, finding time to chat only in their spare time between parties, with only one thing keeping them coming back: the friends they have online.
Throw a bunch of caffeine addicted people in one spot without any control and you could have a
problem. ?Fortunately (or unfortunately for some), designated moderators of the chat room keep excessive spam (scrolling the same line over and over) from being rampant. ?Who gets to be a moderator is often subject for heated debate, because they have control over who is kicked from the chat, and who is banned. ?An old regular was permanently banned for excessive spamming, yet he still tries to come back. ?Maybe the lifestyle has gotten to extremes if someone spends a half hour getting back on the chat, only to be banned within seconds.
So what DO they talk about when they aren?t making programs, playing games, or designing websites? ?Everything. ?From family issues to politics to entertainment, if you can bring it up in a way that at least one person can understand what you?re saying, then you can discuss it. ?Some people would question the ability for a chat room to have a lifestyle, but I think mr_lee says it best: ?This is a totally multicultural chat made up with heaps of different people from many socio-economical groups ;//. [This chat is] more than just chat gimps?but people who i call friends :D?.
