NOTE: ASSUME THAT PEOPLE ARE BASICALLY GOOD AND TRUTHFUL AND THAT ANYTHING THAT I DISCUSS IN THIS THREAD, AND YOUR REPLIES TO IT WILL BE USED FOR COMPLETELEY, UNQUESTIONABLY, LEGAL ACTVITIES, AND THAT I ONLY ACT TO PROTECT MY PRIVACY, even though there is no statuted right to it in the UK.

As I will be going to a university in ... 5 days (fuck me), I best not name it at this juncture (I dont want any methods described thwarted by the time I get there), I worry that my souces of:

1. Gaming

2. Mp3s and DivX(WinMX and DC (++))

... will be cut.

It uses JANET. Although it is said that the attitudes are quite lax there, I still fear. Anyways, I dont want them reading my forum posts regarding the best shit I ever took.

I need to know how best to subvert the bastard limitations that they may place on me. Proxies spring to mind instantly, however, damned near everything must be routed through them.

Heres a list of desires:

1. Unfettered, unlogged browsing

2. Unfettered gaming (HL, Q3, UT, OPF, War3 (generic instructions pref.))

3. Unfettered downloads of mp3s

4. Unfettered Trillian use

Now. I have availiable:

1. Unused P150 box that can be used on home DSL line. BEHIND NAT ROUTER note.

2. Proxomitiron (incase any good browsing tips come in)

Also a list of proxies would help (working ones).

Many Thanks

even if you use a proxy, cant the school still see what you are writing and where you are going due to the connection between you and the proxy?  When you said preventing them from like seeing your message about discussing the best shit you took, safeweb and their encryption comes to mind.  Its the same thing as a proxy but they also encrypt the connection between you and them so no nosey person can see it.  The only problem is safeweb is gone now, atleast i think it is.  So, instead I guess you could used your extra box and setup an encrypted proxy that way.

ANYWAY, back to the topic at hand, I would personally see no problem in the school watching me play online games.  There is no vital or sensative information that you would release while playing a game, besides the fact that packets would be moving so fast it would be hard to get text out.  As for web browsing, Trillian, and the forums, just use an encrypted proxy.  When it comes to mp3s, unless your school has set rules against it, I think they will just look the other way.  However, when it comes to larger files...say something around oh 600mb or more, I think that is out of the question, unless they are really stupid and wouldn't see the downloading large amounts of data as suspicious.

Back to the games do you believe that the schools network is setup to actually prevent you from playin online games?  Or is it you just don't want the school knowing what your doing on the internet?
